What Are the Most Common Types of Car Crashes in New York?

Two Vehicle accident at a busy intersection

Most factors contributing to car crashes in the U.S. at large are related to driver behavior and the surrounding environment. In New York specifically, statistics show that the leading cause of car crashes is driver error, such as distracted and impaired driving, aggressive driving, and failure to obey traffic laws. Other factors that may contribute to road-related accidents include weather, road conditions, vehicle issues, and mechanical failure. Here’s a detailed overview of the most common types of accidents in this state:

Rear-end Collisions

These types of accidents typically occur when one driver fails to keep a safe distance between their car and the one in front of them. This often happens when a driver is distracted or fails to anticipate the actions of other drivers. Moreover, abrupt lane changes, speeding, and tailgating can also contribute to rear-end collisions. Drivers are required to drive a certain distance behind a vehicle to avoid these types of accidents. If a driver fails to do so it can cause either minor or major damages.

Head-On Collisions

Such collisions can happen when a driver fails to stay within their lane or when they mistakenly enter the path of an oncoming vehicle. Depending on the speed of the vehicles, head-on collisions can be especially deadly due to the force and impact of two cars colliding at high speeds. They are also more likely to occur when a driver is overtaking on a two-lane highway and fails to return to their lane in time, or when they make an illegal U-turn in front of oncoming traffic.

Side-impact Collisions

Also called T-bone or broadside collisions, these are common in intersections when one car fails to yield the right of way and rams into the side of another vehicle. This is often the result of running a red light or stop sign. Failure to stop causes these types of wrecks and damages. Speeding or not paying attention to their surroundings while entering an intersection is also a common accident. These are caused by gross negligence on the driver’s part and can be dangerous.

Sideswipe Collisions

Also known as sideswiping accident, this is a type of car crash that can happen when two vehicles are traveling parallel in the same direction. These collisions can be attributed to a multitude of issues, such as driver inattentiveness, distraction, or dozing off at the wheel. Even if these incidents only cause minor damage to vehicles, the probability of serious injuries increases significantly when an impact is powerful enough. Thus, drivers must stay aware on roads and highways by keeping a secure following distance from other cars and driving within their lane boundaries.

Pedestrian Accidents

A common type of car accident in Manhattan and the rest of New York City involves pedestrians. In general, they are particularly vulnerable to severe or fatal injuries due to the lack of protection a vehicle can provide. There are numerous ways these types of accidents occur, such as when drivers fail to yield the right of way or when pedestrians cross the street carelessly, or in areas not designated for crossing. Drivers who are not paying attention to their surroundings could be subject to causing these accidents.

Conclusion

Like most states in the United States, New York is subject to several car accidents, mostly due to driver negligence. To stay safe on the roads, it is important to be aware of one’s driving as well as that of other motorists. Obeying traffic laws and paying attention to the environment are just some ways drivers can reduce the risk of being involved in an accident. Drivers have to keep everyone safe on the road. Failure to do so may cause severe damage and can be liable to serving jail time.
